Last night,  I attended the movie screening in Ball Hall auditorium. Part of the South Arts Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, this film was a “magical realism documentary” and has also made it to Sundance Film Festival. I really enjoyed the style of the film, the quirks, and the whimsical qualities; and after the film was over, Elan Bogarín herself spoke on her work.

Being that I’m interested in making documentaries myself, watching this film documenting the life of the filmmakers’ late grandmother was exciting. The film also resonated with me in the way of its ideas of capturing someone’s essence and their life during and after they have gone. I recently lost my grandfather, and some of the things said in the film were the thoughts and realizations exactly that I have had since going through a similar experience.

I believe that more people should take time to appreciate, watch, and listen to the honest lives of others, regardless of familial relation. This film encouraged this idea and was a really delightful experience, and I’m definitely going to recommend it to others!
